    Aftermath

While the British forces reached their starting positions, the Prince of Wales company suffered a heavy nebelwerfer shelling. The attack of the 2nd company was rather easy despite the lack of tank support. However as soon as the Prince of Wales entered the village, the British forces faced up a violent counterattack from the 9 SS Panzer Division Hohenstaufen units stationned south of the location.

The Welsh Guards were forced to withdraw suffering heavy casualties, 158 men in grand total. The Prince of Wales company had 65 casualties, 30 in the 2nd company including Major Turnbull, killed in action. Lt-Col Herber-Percy was wounded in the attack.

The 1st Battalion Welsh Guards captured the village of Montchamp the next morning after the German forces withdrew during the night.
