With the release of D&D 4th Edition ( very combat-friendly for what I read ) and the news about Warrior Heroes - Armies and Adventures from Two-Hour Wargames, I ask myself some questions.
I have been playing D&D (AD&D) for a long time but finally it is the 3rd edition with the skills management that really pleased me, it reminded me Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu.
However if there are fights in a D&D game though the roleplay is very important in the games that I mastered. Moreover the fights in D&D are not very realistic and they become completly stupid at high level (10th for me) for the fights are far too long and boring. I rather like Warhammer RPG (1st Edition) system. But fireballs are forever...
Nevertheless I can say that I do not like minis fights in my RPG games without forgetting what I said in 1984 : Building 3D scenics for a RPG game was really insane and not really roleplaying.
Frightening isn’t it...
So after playing a lot of miniatures games during the last months, I noticed that if I really like the simple and short fights, I am less strict with the moves and the actions as I do not play against the player characters.
I do not think that I will quit the 3rd edition of D&D for the upcoming 4th edition but I’m interested in Warrior Heroes which could be great if it is a good set of rules for non combat skills which allows a nice management of the players and theirs actions.
